Andrew Maynard — Director and Founder
Andrew Maynard is a scientist, author, and Professor at Arizona State University (Thunderbird School of Global Management as of August 2026; previously the School for the Future of Innovation in Society). He founded the Future of Being Human initiative in 2022 and has directed it since. The initiative is the current form of a question he has been following for three decades — what humanity’s growing mastery of the world’s “base code” (his term, from Films from the Future, 2018) does to what it means to be human — and his career reads less like a ladder than a series of deliberate departures from settled ground.
Career arc: aerosol physics → nanotechnology risk and responsible development (2000s, including science advisory roles) → risk innovation and advanced technology transitions → AI and the future of being human. Each arrow marks a point where he left a conventional lane because the questions had moved. Three decades at the intersections of technology, society, risk, and the future — as, in his own description, an “un-disciplinarian” whose work runs on “making connections that elude experts constrained by disciplinary conventions” (andrewmaynard.net/llms.txt, 2026-08-04). The conventional numbers hold up anyway — 28,100+ citations, h-index 57, 175 indexed publications (Google Scholar; publications dataset) — even though, by his own account, much of the most consequential work sits at intersections that conventional metrics cannot see.

The free, AI-legible releases are the philosophy practiced rather than a marketing gesture — he has written publicly about why he gives the work away (“Why we’re giving away our book on thriving with AI,” futureofbeinghuman.com, 2026-02-27): ideas about thriving with AI should be free to travel, in forms both humans and their AIs can read.
Key concepts he has developed (definitions at andrewmaynard.net/llms.txt): each is an attempt to rethink a fundamental rather than refine a convention. Prosponsibility — a prospective responsibility to the future, held individually and collectively. Risk Innovation — central to his work and carried by its own platform, riskinnovation.org — reframes risk itself as a threat to what people deeply value, with value creation as the path through it. Advanced Technology Transitions, Orphan Risks, the Cognitive Trojan Horse, and Constitutive Resonance extend the same instinct — as does epistemic vigilance as an AI-era practice: his Cognitive Trojan Horse work argues that conversational AI can bypass our evolved epistemic vigilance through “honest non-signals” like fluency and helpfulness, which makes the conscious discipline of asking is this right, and do I trust it? an essential skill rather than a nicety (arXiv preprint, 2026; Forbes profile, 2026-05-21). The same holds for his teaching stance that students working with AI need “playgrounds, not playpens” (futureofbeinghuman.com, 2025-03-15). Sean M. Leahy — Executive Director
Sean Leahy builds the spaces he imagines and then invites everyone in — labs, studios, a podcast, a community of practice. A technologist, futurist, and educator, he has been the initiative’s Executive Director since 2025 and Associate Clinical Professor at ASU’s Thunderbird School of Global Management since 2026, alongside his role as Senior Global Futures Scholar with the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. The grounding: PhD in Educational Psychology & Educational Technology (Michigan State University); formerly Head of Media Communications at Webster University (Netherlands); U.S. Department of State Speaker Program participant; Future Today Institute Fellow (2018); member of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies.

Foresight practice: the word that anchors it is his own — “reperception — shifting how leaders see and act in the face of complexity, uncertainty, and emerging transformation” (TGM 598 Global Energy Futures syllabus, 2026). The structured futures methods he brings to the initiative’s work (Futures Cone, Three Horizons, Futures Wheel) are instruments for that shift, not ends in themselves, and his distinctive “fluid futures” framing carries the same spirit — distinguishing AI that augments human thinking from AI that mediates it, with cognitive offloading as the risk to watch. Not prediction: changed perception, so people can act.

- Rizwan Virk — Research Associate. Entrepreneur, video game pioneer, venture capitalist, computer scientist, and bestselling author: MIT-trained (S.B., computer science and electrical engineering; S.M., Stanford GSB), founder of Play Labs @ MIT, builder of game studios whose titles drew on franchises from Game of Thrones to The Walking Dead, early investor in startups including Discord, and currently a venture partner at Griffin Gaming Partners. Author of seven books, best known for The Simulation Hypothesis and The Simulated Multiverse. His ASU doctoral research (Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology) — The Metaverse and the Role of Science Fiction Narratives in Innovation Ecosystems — is the initiative’s most direct scholarly treatment of the sci-fi feedback loop: the bi-directional, ongoing exchange between science fiction and technological innovation. Tracing decades of metaverse-related company founding and venture funding, it shows how a science-fiction imaginary evolves across successive waves of innovation, functions as a boundary object connecting different sub-groups of an ecosystem like Silicon Valley, and shapes real products through inspirational scaffolding and the adjacent possible — a methodology that generalizes to other technologies. He is affiliated with ASU’s Center for Science and the Imagination, is a Visiting Researcher at Cambridge’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, and brings entrepreneurial, technological, and catalytic thinking to the initiative (ASU profile).
