# Serendipity as method

Serendipity is usually treated as luck — welcome when it strikes, impossible to plan for. Andrew Maynard's counter, running through his books, his teaching, and the Future of Being Human initiative's designed spaces and artifacts, is that serendipity is a method: the conditions for unexpected insight can be deliberately engineered, and what arrives unplanned can be deliberately put to work. The compact statement dates to a 2021 lecture on escaping conventional thinking — the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated ideas "can jolt us out of conventional ways of thinking," and *Future Rising* was built as exactly such a jolt, engineered to "stimulate the serendipitous emergence of new perspectives" (2021-04-09). He is explicit that the move itself is ancient; what he and the initiative practice, on his own account, is deliberateness grown from formation and accumulated experience rather than formal theory (Andrew Maynard, 2026) — a named community value, a button in a newsletter, games built for discovery, syllabi that invite the unexpected into assessment, and a running habit of recording which ideas arrived through unplanned exchanges. The thread runs from a 2018 book of film essays to a 2026 game brief; its negative image — scholarship automated until nothing unexpected survives — is named too.

## The argument

The statement of record is Part Five of Andrew's April 2021 FRANKx lecture notes, titled "The Art of Serendipity." The lecture's problem is escape: conventional thinking traps us inside a bounded infinity of possibilities, and navigating advanced technology transitions means tunneling through to possibilities conventional thought cannot reach — the full possibility-space framework is the ground of [Bounded infinities](bounded-infinities.md). Serendipity is a tunneling method that has, in his words, "fascinated me for many years now": how "the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated ideas can jolt us out of conventional ways of thinking" (2021-04-09). The originality claim is kept small — jolting devices are "actually something we've been doing as a species for thousands of years," Buddhist koans and the arts and humanities among his examples — and the lecture's worry is that decades of formalized science and education have weakened exactly these mechanisms.

*Future Rising* (2020) is the engineered instance: "a mosaic of sixty short and often deceptively simple reflections" that individually introduce new ways of thinking about the future and collectively "intertwine ideas and perspectives in novel ways that are intentionally meant to stimulate the serendipitous emergence of new perspectives." The design goal is stated outright: the book "sets out to be" a "quantum tunneling enabler" (2021-04-09). The practice predates its theory: *Films from the Future* (2018) records its film-by-film reflections taking "unexpected and serendipitous turns" (p. 18; [Sci-fi film as method](film-as-method.md)), and *Future Rising* promises "unexpected insights, and serendipitous delights" (p. 19).

As the initiative formed, the method became a value. **Catalytic Serendipity** is one of its five community values: "Deeply valuing the transformative nature of serendipitous insights and discoveries that arise from casual and unexpected situations, conversations, and interactions, and actively working to translate these into societally beneficial impacts" ([futureofbeinghuman.asu.edu](https://futureofbeinghuman.asu.edu/future-of-being-human-guiding-principles/), captured 2026-08-05; [Community values](community-values.md)). The adjective carries the method — serendipity catalyzed, not waited for — and the closing clause commits to translating delightful accidents into something of use.

The value keeps surfacing across the initiative's builds. The Substack's two-year anniversary post added a "serendipity" button for the archive, with AI buttons adding "yet another layer of serendipity" (2025-04-20). Windmill, conversationally coded with ChatGPT, "is a game of discovery and serendipity" (2025-01-26; [Public experiments](public-experiments.md)). Hyperbubble's brief to Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 listed "serendipitous" among its constraints (2026-07-10); the finished game carries "serendipity tokens that always come with a surprise" and is "designed to surprise, stimulate serendipity, and spark joy" (2026-08-02; [Learning by not trying to learn](learning-by-not-trying.md)). The initiative's Tempe-era community room was stocked to invite serendipitous discovery ([The room built for serendipity](impact-room-for-serendipity.md)) — rooms as instruments is the ground of [Space as infrastructure](space-as-infrastructure.md). In the classroom, FIS 338's active-viewing method tells students to "Embrace the serendipity of new and novel ideas and insights that you weren't expecting" and its self-assessment invites unexpected learning into the grade; FIS 394's class norms carry Catalytic Serendipity verbatim (Fall 2025 syllabi; both courses paused as of August 2026 — [Teaching](teaching.md)).

The method also runs in reverse: not only building for serendipity but harvesting it, and saying so. The humans-as-AI-amanuenses thought experiment began with a reader's LinkedIn question — "and so began the seeds of the thought experiment below!" — and its postscript credits "a very human process of serendipitous inspiration" (2024-11-24; [AI amanuenses](ai-amanuenses.md)). The agentic social AI thread opens as "the result of a rabbit hole that my colleague Mel Sellick sent me down after one of our regular conversations" (2024-10-20; [Agentic social AI](agentic-social-ai.md)). The ChatGPT-novella experiment was "unexpected but serendipitous" (2024-09-28); techlashed.org began over coffee as "a 5 minute personal distraction" (2025-06-01; [Moral panics as risk-perception data](moral-panics.md)); prompt2url was kept and shared out of delight — "(that serendipity again)" (2025-04-20). The genesis notes are a habit, not a system: Andrew is candid that he is "appallingly bad at recalling how my thinking has morphed and evolved over time" (2023-08-21) — the documented cases are a sample, not a ledger.

The stakes run both ways. Positively, serendipity sits on his published list of the core of research and scholarship a physics training gave him: "curiosity, wonder, experimentation, humility, serendipity, the willingness to push against what is settled" (2026-06-14). Negatively, the artisanal-intellectual essay — a disclosed collaboration with OpenAI's Deep Research, line-edited by Andrew — surveys a human-centric scholarly current warning that streamlining research too far risks "squeezing out serendipity and the unexpected insights that come from wrestling with information personally" (2025-02-16; the concern is the surveyed trend's — [The artisanal intellectual](artisanal-intellectual.md)). And the method is still moving: in the Thunderbird phase, leveraging connection and serendipity is among the skills being rethought for leadership in a world of transformative AI and other transformative technologies — active work, not settled doctrine (Andrew Maynard, 2026; [Convening and community](convening.md)).

- **2018 — practice before statement.** *Films from the Future* is written by juxtaposition — twelve science fiction films set against real emerging technologies — and its introduction records the reflections taking "unexpected and serendipitous turns" (p. 18).
- **2020 — the engineered book.** *Future Rising: A Journey from the Past to the Edge of Tomorrow* is published as a mosaic of sixty short reflections, introduced as "a journey of twists and turns, of unexpected insights, and serendipitous delights" (p. 19; [Books](books.md)).

## Engagement and reception

As of 2026-08-13 our [reception record](reception.md) documents no independent published engagement with serendipity-as-method as a stated method — no citation, adoption, or evaluation of the 2021 formulation, and none of Catalytic Serendipity as a named value — and we prefer to say so plainly: an absence of record, stated as absence. One calibration is owed rather than leaned on. By the initiative's own account, instrumenting casual encounters destroys them — a room designed for serendipity cannot log its serendipities ([The room built for serendipity](impact-room-for-serendipity.md)) — so the method's successes were never going to leave a tidy citation trail; but an explanation for why evidence would be scarce is not itself evidence, and we do not offer it as any. What the record does hold is mostly the initiative's own: the community room's effectiveness reported through informal comments from its users (Andrew Maynard, 2026 — the initiative's account, labeled as such); the value discussed on the initiative's own podcast from its first episode (2024-10-15); and the built artifacts checkable directly — the serendipity button live on the Substack, Windmill and Hyperbubble free and playable (continuation by the author, recorded as such). The reader exchanges documented inside the posts — the LinkedIn question, the colleague's rabbit hole — are inputs the method metabolized rather than reception of it, and are recorded on those threads' pages.
