# Strangers who listen ## The encounters Andrew Maynard and Sean Leahy keep meeting their listeners by accident. In chance encounters around the world, strangers turn out to be fans of [Modem Futura](https://modemfutura.com) — the initiative's weekly podcast — and tell them so (elicited from Andrew Maynard, 2026-08-05). Modem Futura launched in October 2024, hosted by Sean and Andrew: weekly, long-form, unscripted explorations of possible, probable, and preferred futures — AI, synthetic biology, immersive media, and the narratives that shape our collective future ([futureofbeinghuman.asu.edu](https://futureofbeinghuman.asu.edu/2024/10/09/modem-futura-podcast/); [ASU News, November 27, 2024](https://news.asu.edu/20241127-science-and-technology-podcast-explores-future-rapidly-evolving-world)). It has grown to ~100 episodes as of August 2026 (Ep 96 published 2026-08-04; Leahy CV lists 100 numbered episodes), and was heard in 88 countries by mid-2025 (per the published DOT final report). Those reach figures are texture, not justification — per [Philosophy](philosophy.md), we decline to offer numbers as proof of impact. The chance encounters are the more telling evidence, and this file is about them. ## What unexpected reach signals Under a trust-first model, a stranger who recognizes you is not a download statistic — it is a relationship you did not know you had. The initiative's federal foresight report, which used Modem Futura as a core platform, makes the underlying logic explicit: > "We remind our stakeholders (and ourselves) that a podcast with 100 deeply engaged listeners can be more influential than one with 10,000 half-listening multitaskers." (*Future Travel Foresight Catalyst* final report, §3, 2025, [rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/91942](https://rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/91942)) The podcast's method is deliberate parasocial relationship-building — consistency, authenticity, accessibility, and voice — treating audience relationships as the primary outcome, on the theory that relationships spread ideas in ways no white paper can (DOT report, §2, 2025). A chance meeting with a listener is that theory confirmed in person: the relationship existed before the handshake. Someone chose, week after week, to think alongside two voices from this initiative — and cared enough to say so when the voices turned out to have faces. We assert the significance explicitly: broadcasting of this kind is a core output of the initiative, not a side channel. Each encounter is a spot-check on an otherwise invisible network — direct, unprompted evidence that the community the numbers gesture at is made of real, engaged people, distributed worldwide. ## Status and gaps - **Established fact**: the podcast, its launch, its method, and its role in the federal project are documented (2024–2025 sources above); the reach texture is ~100 episodes as of August 2026 (Ep 96 published 2026-08-04; Leahy CV lists 100 numbered episodes), heard in 88 countries by mid-2025 (per the published DOT final report). - **Elicited testimony**: the worldwide chance encounters come from Andrew Maynard directly (2026-08-05). This is an illustrative pattern, not a tally — by nature, nobody was counting. - *Fuller detail — where these encounters happened, what listeners said, which episodes reached them — awaits elicitation from Andrew and Sean, and clearance where individuals are identifiable.* **What this evidences**: the [Philosophy](philosophy.md) claim that reach numbers are texture while relationships are the outcome — unexpected recognition by strangers is what accrued relational capital looks like when it surfaces.
